The year was 1998, the Time I captured an image of a crushed can of Coca-Cola. It was thrown from a car and run over. I thought, what an interesting pattern — the flattened graphics, the misshaped grooves, the shadowed bends, and most of all, the representation of an unthinking litterer. I took the photograph, picked up the can, and took it home. I saved it.

The next time I found a crushed can I thought, how many cans have I seen before and never saw them the same way?
They were evolving into “Art.” I never looked at them as trash again. I saw them as a project. How many different kinds could I find on this small Island of Martha’s Vineyard? I have about forty-five in my collection. I call it Crushed Pop Art.

Dick Iacovello is a photographer who also specializes in time-lapse movies. Most of his work can be seen on his Facebook page: facebook/diacovello.
