What’s Vineyard Midnight? It’s a prompt for Vineyarders. We say just those words to people we know, and let them take it from there. Everyone comes up with their own version.
SCENE:
MV TIMES art department, 1 pm on a Wednesday. Community section has to be put to bed by 2 pm. Designers hunched over computers with the intensity of air-traffic controllers. It’s pretty quiet, the click of computer keys, some muffled phone conversations spilling in from the sales department. Everyone knows the drill.
KRIS (Seeing GEOFF, the Community editor, come into the room): Are there any babies?
GEOFF: Nicole — seen any babies?
NICOLE (without looking up from her computer screen): Check Barbara’s desk. I think I saw one on Barbara’s desk.
GEOFF walks over to BARBARA’S desk, picks up a sheet of paper.

GEOFF: OK, Kris, I got one … Ladies and gentlemen, I give you: Vineyard Midnight Hurley.
(Polite applause)
DANIELLE: Chilmark, right?
CHRIS: I say West Tis …
CARRIE: Well we know it’s not Edgartown.
GEOFF: Chilmark it is!
DANIELLE: Welcome to the Vineyard, Vineyard!
GEOFF: Hear, hear!
