Food as Art

These “Food as Art” portraits came out of a classroom-wide exploration of food — food as nourishment, food as it relates to community and gathering, food as a part of our family stories, and finally, food as art.  After having an ongoing discussion with Chantale Légaré, our studio art teacher, about this curriculum investigation, she offered the idea of food as a creative medium — reinterpreting a classic piece of art with food instead of paint, clay, pencil, or charcoal.

Children embraced the challenge of using food as a creative tool, and began to develop a detailed list of foods to use to represent these notable works. Collaborative, small-group explorations with Ms. Légaré resulted in these art pieces, which demonstrate a grasp of color, scale, and texture and food.
